If We’re Going to Change the World, We Must First Change Ourselves: Setting Aside Division to Walk in True Unity as the Body of Christ

A Divided Church Cannot Heal a Divided World

We live in a time of great division—politically, racially, culturally, and socially. And while the world wrestles with these issues, the church is called to be the difference. But how can we bring healing to a broken world when we’re still divided among ourselves? If we’re going to make an impact, we must first confront the things that divide us: color, culture, race, age, and gender.

One Body, Many Parts

The Bible tells us in 1 Corinthians 12:12-27 that we are one body made up of many parts, and each part is essential. That includes people from every background, walk of life, and experience. It’s not enough to merely tolerate one another—we must embrace and celebrate the diversity God designed into His church.

Galatians 3:28 – The Standard for Unity

"There is neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus."
This powerful scripture isn’t just a beautiful sentiment—it’s a divine directive. It reminds us that in Christ, our worldly identities do not determine our value or worth. The ground is level at the foot of the cross.

What Division Looks Like Today

Let’s be honest: the church still struggles with:

  • Racial bias and segregation
  • Ageism and generational gaps
  • Gender-based limitations
  • Cultural misunderstanding and fear of “the other”

But these are not just social problems—they are spiritual issues that hinder the power of the Gospel.

Choosing Unity on Purpose

Unity is not accidental. It’s intentional.
It looks like:

  • Listening instead of judging
  • Inviting others to the table, not just those who look like us
  • Admitting when we’re wrong and seeking reconciliation
  • Loving people not because they agree with us, but because God loved us first

What Happens When We Unite

When the church begins to reflect the Kingdom of God—diverse, vibrant, unified—something powerful happens:

  • Healing replaces hurt
  • Revival becomes possible
  • The world takes notice of the love that binds us together

Jesus said in John 13:35, “By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” That kind of love crosses boundaries and tears down walls.

Conclusion: A Call to Action

The church can’t afford to remain divided. The world is crying out for hope, and we carry the answer—but we must carry it together. Lay down pride. Lay down prejudice. Lay down fear. Pick up grace. Pick up love. Pick up unity.

Let’s be the church that changes the world—together.
